Inchon Landing
United States Marines made a surprise landing at the port of Inchon on September 15, 1950. The port is located on the western side of Korea, south of the 38th parallel, and was a key port in Korea. Douglas MacArthur insisted on landing in the port, even though people thought it would be too risky. He had to convince the Secretary of Defense that it was a necessary action since North Koreas would expect the Marines to land in either Kunsan or Osan. Many of the U.S. troops had very little or no combat experience. As a result of the Inchon invasion, the United States was able to recapture Seoul, South Korea, which had been taken by the communists, on September 16, 1950. It was a changing point in the war but still resulted in a long stalemate.
