Waging War
- General Douglas MacArthur was selected by Truman to be the leader of the United Nations forces in Korea.
- The North Koreans had been able to invade South Korea with Soviet assistance.
- MacArthur came up with a strategy to attack the North Koreans by landing at Inchon.
- The North Koreans left South Korea and headed back north. The United Nations troops advanced to North Korea's border, and MacArthur decided to try to push the enemy forces back into China.
- Chinese and North Korea troops fought back against the United Nation troops and kept them in South Korea, which led to a stalemate.
- MacArthur wanted to make a second front but was opposed by Truman.
- Later, Truman fired MacArthur after MacArthur attacked Truman's policies in a letter to Joseph Martin.
- After MacArthur had left, the war continued for two years. When Eisenhower had become president, he threatened to use atomic bombs, and a truce was finally signed in 1953. Korea remained divided at the 38th parallel.
