United States Activity
Tensions had build between the Soviets and Americans after World War II. The United States did not want the Soviet Union to Spread communism to other countries. The United States first sent troops to South Korea after the Soviet Union invaded Korea in 1945. Japan surrendered South Korea to the Americans. The United States and Soviet Union came to an agreement to divide Korea alone the 38th parallel in 1950. President Truman joined the U.S. troops with the United Nations troops and made General Douglas MacArthur the commander. Truman did not want to declare war but rather only do "police action". The United States had been inclined to enter the war after a series events 1949, starting with the explosion of a Soviet atomic bomb. The Soviets had also intervened in Greece and Turkey. In 1950, the National Security Council advised Truman to increase funding for the military to allow them to go up against the Soviet Union. The United States also was uncomfortable with the communist party's rise in China. The U.S. responded when North Korea invaded South Korea and fought against communism. An important action taken by the United States was the landing at the port of Inchon.
